Our Mission
At Futures-Essex Ltd, we provide education tailored to each student’s unique needs. Our mission is to create a supportive and inclusive environment where young people can feel a sense of belonging and receive the encouragement they need to thrive in their learning journeys. We are dedicated to helping every student achieve their full potential by offering flexible learning options and a community that values their individuality.
We work with young people to create a nurturing environment tailored for those experiencing emotionally-based school avoidance, mental health challenges, special educational needs (SEN) and those seeking a non-traditional school setting. Nestled deep in the Essex countryside in Bicknacre, our Studio is tucked away up a leafy, tree-lined country lane, far from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities. We don’t have a dress code, so feel free to work wherever you’re most comfortable—whether that’s at a desk, on the sofa, or even lying on the floor
At Futures-Essex, we focus on helping students “learn to be” before they “learn to do,” as their sense of self and emotional well-being is the foundation for all learning. According to child development theories like those of Jean Piaget, children first develop basic cognitive and emotional skills, building trust, secure attachments, and a sense of safety and identity before engaging in more complex tasks.
Trauma can significantly disrupt a child’s development. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) include trauma such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. These experiences can cause toxic stress, impairing cognitive functions like attention, memory, and problem-solving. This stress response often leads to difficulties in learning and behaviours that may be misunderstood as misbehaviour or lack of interest.
To support our students, Futures-Essex staff offer a trauma-informed approach to their teaching, creating a safe and supportive environment that helps students overcome these barriers and thrive academically.
